My Projects

Lords of the Laundry is an Academic Group Project that uses two barrel alternative controller with an Arduino to clean or dirty different types of armor to put on the respective team's soldiers. Those soldiers then fight each other in a rock-paper-scissors type mechanic to determine which armor type wins.

Our prompt for this project was to create a game or virtual experience in hopes of attending Alt.Ctrl.GDC, an event at the Game Developers Conference. While our project was not accepted, we are still very proud of what we made.

I worked in a team of 11, consisting of 5 developers and 6 designers. I acted as Lead Developer and Project Manager. My responsibilities included:
• Used HTML and JavaScript with Express.js, p5.js, SerialPort, and socket.io to interface Arduino circuit with HTML webpage
• Used socket.io to collect and parse live data from Arduino, used Express.js to create app structure, implemented main game loop to read Arduino data and dynamically change game state and graphics based on user input
• Led and assisted teammates in all aspects of project development and debugging
• Organized and distributed team tasks based on team members’ skills and preferences

If I were to redo this project I would definitely do a little more research on effective libraries and build this in a much more modular way from the ground up. Even with our structural and leadership issues, though, we were able to get on track and work together to finish this project well.

The Supermaze

The Supermaze is an Academic Solo Project, a three-dimensional, multi-level maze with 3 different sizes and difficulty levels. It is designed with up and down transport points to transfer the players between the levels, and the difficulty determines the visibility of the transport points. The development process was a lot less digital than I expected. I started by creating all the mazes on paper, making sure they were designed well and the layers lined up. I then wrote out numbers in each of the grid spaces to indicate what it was, and translated those all to 2-d arrays in my program files. Then I used each of those numbers to determine where my character could and couldn't move and/or what action was triggered.

The basics of how I made this project:
• Created a three dimensional maze game using JavaScript, PixiJS, HTML, and CSS
• Implemented different sizes and levels of difficulty to increase engagement

If I could restart this project I would love to mandomly generate the mazes to have several different layouts in each size. However, this being one of my first major projects using HTML and Javascript I'm proud of what I was able to make in two weeks.

LifeSync

LifeSync is an Academic Solo Project. It's an iOS application, a productivity hub that allows students to track their schedule, meals, budget, and habits in one centralized place. I was inspired to design this application because there isn't really an application that allows students to track all four items in one place.

Because this was my first time working with Swift, I really struggled to implement external libraries and got hyper-fixated on trying to learn things that weren't of great significance to my project. A lot of the data for my finance tracker and meal planner ended up being hard coded, because early on in the project I spent too much time trying to use a library to get a highlight to show up on the day of the calendar that was selected.

For this project, I:
• Conceptualized and designed productivity application to help students track their schedule, finances, habits, and meals
• Developed using Xcode and Swift

While this project could have been developed better, I'm proud of myself for being so ambitious during my first ever Swift class. I was able to create a well-structured, if not fully fledged, app and with a little more development I believe I could turn it into something great.

Virtual Etch-A-Sketch

This project, based on the prompt "Art Meets Engineering" from my Physical Computing class, prompted us to do something creative and artistic with an Arduino circuit. I decided to create an Etch-A-Sketch using potentiometers for direction and a button to change color, which displayed on my screen in a Processing sketch. Take a look at my blog post for a more in-depth description of the project and a post-mortem video.

I struggled to come up with an idea at first, because an Etch-A-Sketch felt boring and kind of "typical," and I wasn't sure I had the right parts. I ended up deciding that by adding a colored LED that matches the color on the screen, it would have that extra factor to go above and beyond. For this project, I:
• Created an Arduino circuit to interface with Processing to create an Etch-A-Sketch Display
• Added features to change the color of lines created in Processing

I'm happy with how this project turned out. In a future iteration, I'd love to spend time decreasing lag and implementing better ways to change color for better pictures and more creative freedom. However, with the fact that I only had two weeks to come up with an idea, build it, write a blog post and create a post mortem video, I'm happy with what I created!

I'm an aspiring front-end developer and a 4th year New Media Interactive Development (NMID) major at Rochester Institute of Technology. I've always enjoyed art, design, and programming, so I chose to become an NMID major to be able to combine these passions into a career that I would love.

I am interested in all facets of programming and design, but I especially enjoy front-end, web, and interactive design and all of the visual creativity involved in it. I love the idea of creating something that other people will get to see and enjoy, with a very smooth and pleasant user experience.
